Vijayawada: Stating that AP is going to become the seed hub of the country, agriculture minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy observed that producing the global standard quality seed will be high on the agenda of the proposed mega seed park in Kurnool. He said that farmers, scientists, private organisations and NGOs will be roped in to achieve best results in producing the quality seed from the park.
Addressing a workshop on mega seed park here on Wednesday, Somireddy said that chief minister Chandrababu Naidu’s visionary plans have helped them partner with the University of Iowa in setting up the mega seed park. He added that the government has already spent Rs.100 crore to begin the activities of seed park in about 600 acres. “The state government firmly believes that the quality food grains could be produces only with quality seed. So, we have decided to make the state a seed hub to help the farmers produce quality food grains,” said Somireddy.He added that experts from international and national level universities and scholars will also be invited to give their suggestions on producing the seed.
The park will produce seeds in next two years as they are readying its Detailed Project Report (DPR). He said that the government will shortly appoint a regular chief executive officer to the seed park to push the works ahead. They will encourage private firms to set up their shops in the seed park as they would help accelerate the seed park.
